Tips to Improve Safety in Your Workplace
On-Site:
- If you wear a hard hat, make sure it fits properly and that the suspension is adjusted to fit comfortably, but snuggly.
- Wear the right safety footwear, and have it fitted by an expert. The ANSI-Z41 label inside means your footwear meets recognized safety standards.
- Always wear protective glasses, and keep them clean and scratch-free. It’s always a good idea to have a spare pair handy.
- Removing all jewelry before you start work. Use the right gloves for the job.
- If you work with chemicals, cleaning solvents, etc., make sure to wear gloves and protective clothing that resists chemicals.
- If you're in a noisy environment, use ear plugs or ear muffs.
- Check your respirator to make sure that it is ready and safe for use. Make sure it fits securely, is not clogged or damaged, and you cannot smell contaminants.
At the Office:
- Adjust your chair, keyboard and monitor to fit your body and posture. Make sure that your chair is comfortable to sit up straight; your keyboard should be placed so your wrists are in a neutral position; and your monitor should be at or slightly below eye level.
- If you sit for long periods of time, change your posture regularly. Take short breaks to get up and move around, even if it’s just a walk through the halls or around the building.
- If you stand for long hours on hard surfaces, request anti-fatigue mats to relieve the strain on your feet, legs and backs.
- Keep frequently used documents or materials within easy reach to avoid unnecessary bending or straining.
- Practice proper lifting techniques, and use trucks, carts, or dollies whenever possible.
- Avoid repetitive motion injuries by mixing it up. Rotate tasks, take short breaks, and vary your pace to reduce stresses through repetition.
