Shillington Box Co. of St. Louis is among Best in Workplace Safety
Department of Labor Bestows Company with Prestigious SHARP Award

St. Louis, Mo – The Missouri Department of Labor is pleased to announce that Shillington Box Company of St. Louis has earned the distinction of being named one of the newest members of the Missouri’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) for its excellent workplace safety record. Now that Shillington has joined the Program, there is a new total for SHARP businesses to 36 in the state.

“We welcome Shillington to Missouri’s elite workplace safety program,” said Larry Rebman, Missouri Labor Department Director. “The businesses that belong to this group are among the best of the best when it comes to providing a safe and hazard-free workplace. These businesses care about their employees and should be rewarded for the commitment they put forth in protecting them.”

Shillington Box Company LLC is a subsidy of Forrest Resources and employs 67 people in Missouri. Shillington Box is a designer, manufacturer and marketer of corrugated packaging materials including sheets, shipping containers and displays. Since 1906, Shillington has employed workers with the Carpenter’s Local District Council of Greater St. Louis. For the past ten years, Shillington has implemented a safety and wellness program directed at improving the overall health of each individual.

“Our number one goal has always been the safety of our employees; we encourage safety suggestions from our employees so that they feel they are part of the safety program,” said Timothy Courtney, General Manager of Shillington Box Company. “Together we will achieve World Class Safety Excellence.”

Shillington was honored for its achievement during a ceremony on September 22 at the Carpenters Hall in St. Louis. Officials from the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Missouri Department of Labor attended the event to present the business a Certificate of Recognition, a SHARP flag, and a proclamation issued by Governor Jay Nixon.

SHARP was implemented in Missouri in 1992 and offers the highest level of consultative services to businesses with 250 or fewer employees on site. The Missouri On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program is the prerequisite for those who wish to be a part of SHARP. To be eligible for SHARP, the worksite’s lost workday injury and illness rate must be below the national average for its industry.

Through the On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program, Missouri employers have avoided more than $4.6 million in OSHA fines in the state’s fiscal year 2011. In addition, 5,665 serious workplace hazards were identified by on-site safety consultants and corrected by employers.
