Director's Spotlight: Workers Memorial Day 2010

MO Labor Department Director Larry Rebman Several hundred people gathered on the South Lawn of the Capitol on Wednesday, April 28th, to commemorate Workers Memorial Day, an event of remembrance for Missouri workers who lost their lives while on the job in 2009.  To further honor these workers and to promote safer workplaces, Gov. Jay Nixon recently proclaimed April 25 through May 1 as Workers Memorial Week in Missouri.

 

 

Department Investigations Lead to Contractors Facing Prevailing Wage Violations, Criminal Charges

  

Dollar SignAn investigation conducted by the Missouri Labor Department’s Division of Labor Standards (DLS) has led to charges being filed against a Michigan contractor for failing to pay workers the appropriate prevailing wage rates on projects in Scott County.

Director Rebman present mementos to family member More than 100 people gathered at the Missouri State Capitol on April 28 to pay tribute to Missouri workers who lost their lives in 2009 while on the job. The ceremony was led by Missouri Labor Department Director Larry Rebman, whose purpose was to honor these workers and promote safer workplaces. Several family members of the deceased workers also attended the ceremony. To further honor these workers and to promote safer workplaces, Gov. Jay Nixon proclaimed April 25 through May 1 as Workers Memorial Week in Missouri.

Labor Department Director Credited with Tough Oversight of Missouri Labor Practices

Workers' Memorial Day Ceremony- 2010On April 15, the Labor-Management Council (LMC) of Greater Kansas City honored three outstanding individuals for their work and influence in labor relations. The organization’s 31st anniversary celebration was held at the Argosy Casino in Kansas City, Mo.

 

 

New Member Appointed to the State Board of Mediation

On March 25, Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Lewis B. Moye, St. Louis, as a member of the State Board of Mediation (SBM). Moye is a retired autoworker from the Chrysler plant in Fenton, Mo., where he worked for 44 years. He has 35 years experience as a UAW union representative and was president of the St. Louis chapter of the Black Trade Unionists for 30 years. The governor has appointed Moye for a two-year term ending April 1, 2012.

   

Commission on Human Rights Fair Housing Symposium Educates Missourians

Fair Housing Symposium To recognize National Fair Housing Month, which was kicked off in April, the Missouri Commission on Human Rights partnered with the City of Jefferson Human Rights Commission, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Jefferson City NAACP, and the Human Rights Taskforce of the Missouri Association for Social Welfare to educate Missourians about discrimination in the rental and sale of housing, mortgage lending, real estate transactions, predatory lending, and affordable housing. The Fair Housing Symposium was held on Thursday, April 29, in Jefferson City at City Hall. There was no cost for the public to attend.

   

Commission on Human Rights Manager Receives Prestigious Award

On April 29, Sheryl Rose, a manager of the Missouri Commission on Human Rights, St. Louis Office, was awarded the Open Door Award by the Metropolitan St. Louis Equal Housing Opportunity Council (EHOC). Each year, the EHOC recognizes those individuals and organizations in the community who have gone beyond the call of duty to further fair housing in the metropolitan St. Louis area.
