New Member Appointed to the State Board of Mediation
On March 25, Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Lewis B. Moye, St. Louis, as a member of the State Board of Mediation (SBM). Moye is a retired autoworker from the Chrysler plant in Fenton, Mo., where he worked for 44 years. He has 35 years experience as a UAW union representative and was president of the St. Louis chapter of the Black Trade Unionists for 30 years. The governor has appointed Moye for a two-year term ending April 1, 2012.
The SBM is a Division of the Missouri Labor Department. The Board is charged with regulating the labor relations of public utilities and determining appropriate bargaining units of public employees based on their community of interests. The SBM also conducts elections to determine whether petitioning labor organizations have majority support within bargaining units and should be certified as the exclusive bargaining representatives for the workers in these bargaining units.
In fiscal year 2009, there were 45 petitions filed with the SBM, and 30 representation elections conducted, affecting more than 2,344 employees.
