City of Kinloch Charged with Failing to Insure City’s Workers
The Missouri Labor Department filed a misdemeanor charge against Kinloch City Mayor Keith Conway for failure to provide city employees workers’ compensation insurance which is required under Missouri law.
All non-construction employers, with a few exceptions, who employ five or more workers, must comply. Located near Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the city of Kinloch employs about 25 workers and has a population of approximately 450 people. The city could be fined more than $55,000.
Documents filed in the St. Louis Circuit Court said there is no record of coverage from June 2006 through March 2009. The accusation became an issue after an employee was hurt on the job and filed a claim with the state for $2,873 in medical bills.
“They are responsible for insuring their workers and they didn’t,” said Amy Susan, Director of Communications for the Labor Department. “And that’s a misdemeanor.”
Conway is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 9.
