Mine Safety and Health Inspections

Mining is one of the most dangerous industries in the country. Historically, 2 Missouri miners are killed each year and over 100 are injured while working in the mines or caves. To help make Missouri’s mines and caves safer, the Division offers FREE programs to train Missouri miners on implementing safe and healthy working habits at the workplace. Services include: safety and health, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and mine rescue.

Inspections

Chapter 293 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri requires that each mine be inspected on a regular basis for hazards and unsafe or unhealthy work practices. Underground mines are inspected on a quarterly basis, and surface mines are inspected at least twice a year.

Those mines regulated by the mandates of Chapter 293 shall be assessed an inspection fee based on tonnage of materials produced, sold, or shipped per quarter.
